“Recovery”

Frank Turner – Tape Deck Heart (2013)

All the way from England screams a great musician, Frank Turner. The folk punk songwriter has been performing since 2001 and is nothing without his band The Sleeping Souls. They accompany him during any live act or studio recording. His sound could be described as a VERY tame version of Dropkick Murphys. However, that wouldn’t do him justice. So take a moment to take in the fun and exciting music that Frank Turner has made. It will most certainly put a smile on your face.

“Brother in the Night”

The Weeks – Dear Bo Jackson (2013)

From Jackson, Mississippi come a new blend of indie rock. The group has made an album all but one year since their formation in 2006. Still, with todays mass bias for any popular music, it is hard to hear something unique and worthwhile. Lucky for you, this gem might be hidden but it is worth the hunt. Their sound is something of a blend between Dr. Dog, this years favorite, Alabama Shakes. While that comparison might not be perfect, their musics beauty stems from every plucked string, thumbed bass note and vocal breeze that escapes from The Weeks.

“Miracle Mile”

Cold War Kids – Dear Miss Lonely Hearts (2013)

Let’s go back in time. Almost 10 years ago, all the way back to 2004. We are sitting on a bench in sunny Long Beach, enjoying the sun and weather. However, in an apartment close by Cold War Kids was being born. Over the course of the next 9 years, four studio albums would be released by the indie rock band. Within two years we were gifted two albums from Cold War Kids, Mine is Yours and Dear Miss Lonelyhearts. Since I started listening, their 2013 release has already become my favorite. Perhaps its the regal combination of drums and piano, or the amazing imperfect vocals. Regardless of my reasons for loving this album, you should listen to more than just “Miracle Mile” if you truly want to find out the talent that is Cold War Kids.

“White Doves”

Young Empires – Wake All My Youth (2013)

The haute rock band from Toronto has released their debut EP entitled Wake All My Youth. Their sound is said to be similar to The Killers or Arcade Fire. However, when I listen to their calming riffs I hear an indie pop version of Foals or even a distant cousin of Minus the Bear. While not much is known about Young Empires, it is evident that their music will fair well in todays world of abundant music. Regardless of your musical tastes, you should walk away feeling that their extended play is nothing short of amazing.

“Radioactive”

Imagine Dragons – Night Visions (2013)

Open your eyes and get ready to embrace the Las Vegas indie rock band Imagine Dragons. The first studio album since their formation in 2008 has come after a long and winding road. The bands members agree that their sound comes from and never without emotion. That is shown in the details of their formation, and the loss of a few members. Still, their summer sound is a collaboration of raw and unfiltered life and that natural essence is heard everywhere in their music. So take the time to listen to more than just “Radioactive.” Take a moment out of your day to listen to all of Night Visions.
